He was born on October 11, 1936, in Troy, Alabama, USA, as Willie Joe Ligon.
His grandfather was a preacher, while his father sang in a gospel quartet.
At age 14, Ligon moved to LA to live with his uncle.
There, he attended Jefferson High School.
